I’m Jola (Jay), the heart and hands behind AdornedbyJay.
My braiding journey started in childhood, styling my mum, sisters, and cousins with joy and creativity I didn’t fully understand at the time. Back then, it felt like just a hobby. But one moment changed everything. In secondary school, I offered to braid a girl’s hair who often came to school with hair that just didn't look right which impacted her confidence. After a simple set of cornrows, I saw her completely transform; not just her look, but her confidence. That was the first time I realized: this wasn’t just hair. It was healing.
Still, for many years, I ignored the deeper pull of this passion. I did hair to help people out, never thinking I was really making a lasting impact. I went to university, earned a master’s degree, and spent four years working in the corporate world. Yet something in me kept returning to the quiet power of braiding- how it touched people’s lives, how it lit something up in me.
What started as a side hustle became a calling I couldn’t ignore.
In my own journey with beauty, I’ve had seasons of feeling lost, unseen, and disconnected. Placing too much weight on my outward appearance, and not enough on what was happening inside. But with each style I created, each client I adorned, I began to see that the same impact I made on others was something I needed to extend to myself.
Transforming hair was transforming me too.
That’s why AdornedbyJay exists: to help women feel beautiful, seen, and whole not just externally, but in mind, body, and spirit. To me, hair and beauty is more than a look. It’s a reflection of the heart. It’s self-expression. It’s confidence. It’s healing. It’s identity. It’s purpose. It’s becoming.
